Two families left devastated

Daniel Markel and Wendi Adelson Markel in happier times.

November 13, 2023, was anything but an ordinary day for Donna Adelson, 73, and her husband, Dr. Harvey Adelson as they waited anxiously in Miami International Airport to board a one-way flight to Vietnam, with a stop in Dubai. Neither Vietnam nor Dubai has extradition treaties with the United States.

Once they were on that flight, they’d be out of reach of law enforcement. They’d liquidated much of their fortune and were relieved to be leaving behind all the trauma of the last several years.

But they never made their flight. Despite their denials, they’d been under suspicion for having a role in the murder of their son-in-law, Daniel Markel. The FBI had received a tip that the Adelsons were leaving the country and arrested Donna at the airport. Harvey was not arrested.

Their son, Charlie, had been found guilty for his role in the murder just the week before. Things were going from bad to worse for the Adelsons.

On November 15, 2023, Donna Adelson was indicted by a grand jury and is currently being held in the Leon County jail with no bond.
