A Successful Writer Tells How She Works
Elizabeth George is author of the Thomas Lynley series and now shares her writing process
Who is Elizabeth George?
Elizabeth George is the author of a very successful series of twenty-one books, centered around a titled Scotland Yard detective named Thomas Lynley, and his partner, at the other end of the class structure, Barbara Havers. The two main characters are a study in contrasts and the crimes are complex. But these are not typical procedurals. The characters play as important roles as the crimes they are called on to solve.
Interestingly, George started her career as a high school English teacher in California. She quit teaching when the first book, A Great Deliverance, (not an affiliate link) was published. The books went on to become a successful TV series on BBC.
I have read ten of the twenty-one books in the series and am a big fan of George’s writing. She’s quite unlike anyone else and defies most of the current writing advice. So I was thrilled when she wrote a book about her processes. A lesson from the master, I thought, and immediately bought Write Away, (not an affiliate link) published in 2004.
